Agricultural prices are central to farm incomes, consumer food prices and policy analysis. Official statistics may describe prices at different stages of the supply chain, so the statistical meaning of a quoted agricultural price depends on the market stage, commodity, location and reference period.
1. Why agricultural prices are measured
Price statistics help analyse farm returns, consumer costs, market integration and policy interventions. They are also inputs into agricultural income analysis, price indices and broader economic statistics.
Agricultural Price Statistics in India connects definitions, indicators, denominators and official-data interpretation. ISS questions often test whether a candidate can distinguish a statistical concept from the administrative or policy process behind it.
2. Farm harvest and market prices
A farm harvest price refers to the price relevant at the farm-gate or harvest stage under the specified collection methodology. Wholesale and retail prices represent later stages of the marketing chain. These series should not be substituted for one another without adjustment and explanation.
Price at the farm or harvest stage under the stated definition.
Price at a wholesale market stage.
Price paid at the retail stage.
A policy benchmark for specified commodities, distinct from every observed market transaction.
3. Minimum Support Price and observed prices
A policy-administered support price is conceptually different from an observed market price. An ISS answer should distinguish an announced or policy price from transaction prices actually recorded in markets and should identify the commodity and marketing season.
In numerical questions, write the formula first, identify the numerator and denominator, and state the unit. In descriptive answers, define the indicator before discussing its uses or limitations.
4. Seasonal and spatial variation
Agricultural prices can vary by season, quality, location, arrivals and storage conditions. Reliable comparison therefore requires standardised commodity definitions, units, markets and reference periods.
5. Price indices and real analysis
A price index summarises movements across a basket using a specified weighting system. To study real changes in agricultural incomes or values, analysts may combine nominal values with appropriate price measures, while carefully matching the relevant basket and period.
7. Three important questions
Try each one on your own first, then tap the answer.
Why is a farm-gate price different from a retail price?
Show answer
They refer to different stages of the marketing chain and can include different marketing, transport, storage and trading components.
A commodity price rises from ₹2,000 to ₹2,300 per quintal. Find the percentage increase.
Show answer
Increase = ₹300. Percentage increase = 300/2,000 × 100 = 15%.
Explain the main statistical issues in constructing agricultural price series.
Show answer
Discuss commodity specification, quality, market selection, seasonal variation, units, collection frequency, missing observations, spatial variation and the distinction between administered and observed prices.
Key takeaways
- Agricultural prices differ by stage of the supply chain.
- Policy prices and observed market prices are conceptually distinct.
- Seasonality and spatial variation are major measurement issues.
- Price indices require a defined basket, weights and reference period.
