Tourism Statistics in India: Domestic and Foreign Tourism, Indicators and Measurement

Topic: Official StatisticsLevel: ISS / Govt / Private SectorReading time: about 8 minutes

Tourism is a service-sector activity whose measurement depends heavily on definitions of visitors, trips, nights and expenditure. Official tourism statistics therefore require careful classification and integration of survey and administrative information.

1. What is measured?

Tourism statistics can describe visitor flows, trips, nights, expenditure, destinations, purpose of travel and accommodation activity. The unit of measurement must be stated because a person, trip and night are different statistical units.

2. Domestic and international tourism

Domestic tourism concerns travel within the country by residents, while international tourism involves travel across national borders. These categories support different source systems and estimation procedures.

3. Visitors, trips and nights

One person may make multiple trips, and one trip may involve several nights. Therefore visitor counts cannot automatically be substituted for trip counts or overnight stays.

4. Expenditure measurement

Tourism expenditure may be studied by purpose, visitor type, destination or time period. Survey recall, valuation and classification can affect estimates.

5. Sources and sampling

Tourism statistics can combine household surveys, visitor surveys, accommodation data, border or administrative records and other operational sources. Sampling frames and expansion factors matter for survey estimates.

6. Interpretation

A rise in visitor numbers does not necessarily imply the same percentage rise in expenditure or nights. Analysts should examine composition, duration and spending intensity.

Visitor

A person meeting the specified tourism definition.

Trip

A travel episode defined according to the statistical framework.

Night

An overnight stay; useful for measuring duration of tourism activity.

ISS Exam Focus

For official-statistics questions, never give a number without its definition. State the statistical unit, reference period, coverage, numerator and denominator, and distinguish a level, rate, ratio, stock or flow.

Exam tip

In a numerical question, write the formula first, substitute the data second, calculate third, and finish with the correct unit. In a descriptive question, organise the answer under definition, methodology, data source, quality and interpretation.

Three important questions on this topic

Try each one on your own first, then tap the answer.

Question 1 | Conceptual (2 marks)

Why are visitor count and trip count not necessarily the same?

Show answer

One person can make multiple trips during the reference period, so persons and trips are different statistical units.

Question 2 | Numerical (5 marks)

A survey estimates 80,000 visitors and 240,000 visitor-nights. Calculate average nights per visitor.

Show answer

240,000 / 80,000 = 3 nights per visitor.

Question 3 | Descriptive (10 marks)

Discuss the main challenges in compiling tourism statistics.

Show answer

Cover definitions, multiple trips, sampling frames, seasonal variation, border and accommodation data, survey recall, expenditure measurement, duplication and reconciliation across sources.

Key takeaways

  • A person meeting the specified tourism definition.
  • A travel episode defined according to the statistical framework.
  • An overnight stay; useful for measuring duration of tourism activity.
  • Always state the population, reference period, unit, numerator and denominator before interpreting an official statistic.
